On the subject of technological progress, my older brother, a United fan, pointed out that on MOTD (Match of the Day, running on the BBC since 1964 and hosted by the staid but sometimes controversial Gary Lineker) the words ’Goal United!’ are often followed by ‘VAR review’ and then ‘Goal Disallowed’.
For people living under a rock in Sioux City, IA or Bedworth, Warwickshire VAR is the Video Assistant Referee which debuted in July 2016 and has been the source of great fan suffering and frustration since then. My brother says the trick is to postpone the celebration – go get another ginger biscuit or freshen up your cup of tea – b4 (!) you even think of celebrating. We look back with misty nostalgia at the pre-2016 days of instant gratification. When a goal was scored all that was needed was a quick check on the linesman’s flag and you could go absolutely nutso!
