As half time approached the Barrow lads were looking forward to a nice cup of tea after holding Wrexham goalless through 45 minutes. Then the roof fell in on them!
First Wrexham had been caught napping when after just 33 seconds. Barrow’s Newbie played a nice ball in from the left in front of the retreating Wrexham defenders. Spence slotted it home adding further pain for the hung-over Wrexham supporters.
And after some enterprising but fruitless play from both teams the half is drawing to a close…..but wait….
after three pinpoint passes on the left Fletcher slots it home from 15 yards – a sweet goal at 45 (+9) minutes. Two minutes later Paul Mullin steps up to a free kick from 20 yards (again on the left) and hits a right foot missile into the top left-hand corner. Totally unstoppable at 45 (+11) minutes. Well, that’s that! Or is it? A Wrexham corner from the right floats deep beyond the left-hand post where Fletcher, who rises majestically and unopposed, crashes it home at 45 (+13) minutes. Three in four minutes! Left hook, right hook, uppercut and Barrow hit the canvas sprawling inanimate. Out for the count. Just imagine that Barrow changing room at half time!
So this is why Wrexham are getting 50,000 to home games. Just look at the highlights – you can see they are playing Premier League type football! Buy your season tickets as soon as they become available. We are witnessing the unstoppable!
In the second half Wrexham are in total control. But Barrow have the best defense in the division. Used to have.
A deep ball from the right enters the goalmouth in the 68th minute where Fletcher rises once more to head home, claiming his first game ball for the club. Fletcher’s number is 26 but his age is 36, which doesn’t seem to be a problem when he plays like this! The Anglo/Scot, born in Shrewsbury, moved to Scotland on his father’s death when he was 10. He started his career in Edinburgh, playing six seasons with Hibs, before moving to Burnley, Sunderland, Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, Stoke City and Dundee. He always stayed a while but the teams he was with often got relegated. He has played 33 times for Scotland, scoring 10 goals. Never quite made it into the big time, but real close! This was his 400th game in the English Football League (in addition to 189 in the Scottish Football League) it was his 536th goal in those leagues. A fiery man, once sent of for head-butting an opponent he is often voted the player’s player of the season at his club. In May 2016, Fletcher was fined for not disclosing that his wife was the driver when his car was caught speeding on the A66 in Appleby-in-Westmorland. Carlisle magistrates fined him £1,720. and put six points on his driving license. Take your hats off gentlemen and ladies, we have witnessed true greatness!
