Personally, I thought he was a homebody. Didn’t think he would want to move his kids (6,5,2, and 3 months) to the continent. Thought the opportunity to beat Shearer’s record would give him pause. But after so many weeks of hesitation, so many months of uncertainty, suddenly he was gone. Gone to Bayern Munich!

And, no disrespect to Kane and his supreme talents, distributing from deep, playing deft one-twos on the edge of the area, and scoring! With his head, with his left foot, with his right foot, from a free kick, from a counterattack, from a corner. Deceptively quick with a short back lift, year in and year out he scores a pan-full of goals – 17 already for Bayern Munich in all competitions.

As I was saying, no disrespect to Kane the other thing this demonstrates is the preeminence of the Premier League in European football. La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and La Ligue are each dominated by two or three super-clubs and the rest are pitifully weak in comparison with the Premier League. The top 15 teams in the Premier League can hold their own against the best Europe has to offer. The Premier League should get at least one or maybe two more seats in the UEFA competitions.

And in the Premier League, Kane moved clear of the great Wayne Rooney during the 2022-23 season and his 213 goals are 47 behind Shearer. Wonder whether he sees that as unfinished business?!

Meanwhile Kane just can’t stop scoring. He continued his impressive goalscoring form with a double against Heidenheim as Bayern Munich moved top of the Bundesliga. Having scored a hat-trick in each of his two previous league games, Kane has set a new league record for the most goals scored after 11 games. He has also already outscored last season’s joint-top scorers of the Bundesliga – Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Fullkrug who each finished on 16 goals last year!  In early November! And with Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in support this incredible barrage is likely to continue!

Today he overtook Robert Lewandowski’s tally of 16 from 11 matches in 2019, putting Bayern top of the table by a point.

So forget about Ronaldo and all those Saudi renegades!  And while you enjoy the great football on offer in the Premier League keep an eye on two other pre-eminent goal-scorers who truly deserve our admiration. The great Lionel Messi in Miami and the great Harry Kane in Munich!
