Gedas is Lithuanian but he plays for the Ukraine team. Not surprising since the Lithuanians are a rather frosty outfit. But that’s what fifty years of Soviet occupation will do to you!

The league is the National Metropolitan Soccer League, Over 48 Division and the teams are playing the second semifinal.
The game is being contested on a turf pitch in Oak Brook in perfect conditions – the late autumn sunshine is warm and bright.
Team Lithuania are favorites, after gleaning 45 points from their 18 games. Whereas Team Ukraine only managed 35 points from their 17 games.
The previous day two Polish teams faced off in the first semifinal. It was decided on penalties after a hard-fought 2-2 draw. The final, between Calisia of Poland and the winner of today’s game will take place Sunday 11/12, 11.00am at Oak Brook. It should be a great game!
By way of warm up the Team Lithuania engage in a game of Keepy-Uppy. They are quite good and beat twenty touches easily!

The Ukrainian captain (player-manager?) is very animated as he outlines the match strategy to his teammates, at great length.

The referees are a cheerful and accomplished crew. It’s likely that they have to put up with all kinds of banter from players who have been around the block a time or two.

Mario, League Commissioner, is clearly proud of what has been achieved since the merger of rival conferences, the National Soccer League and the Metropolitan Soccer League in March of this year. He’s an enthusiast and a great advocate for the League and the game.

Team Lithuania edged Team Ukraine 5-3 in a game of great contention and skill. But the blue and the yellow of the opposing teams made us neutrals think of the plight of the Ukrainian people and their inspiring bravery.
The League website is at https://www.nslchicago.org/index.html Here you can witness the scale of this Chicago soccer enterprise and get a sense of the dedication and professionalism with which it’s being run.
It’s supposed to be mild and sunny Sunday. Why not come out and watch the game? Once again the final will take place Sunday 11/12, 11.00am at Oak Brook. You will enjoy it, without question!
