What an extraordinary weekend for football in the Premier League!
Spurs outplayed Luton but found it hard to score despite missing several chances. Bissouma was sent off for a dive drawing a second yellow card. And Spurs frustration grew until the talented Maddison worked some magic on the byline to set up Micky van de Ven for his first goal since joiningin the summer from Wolfsburg.
Raheem Sterling starred as Chelsea came back from a goal down to win 4-1 in an impressive display. But debutantes Burnley had their chances too and I still take my hat off too Vincent Kompany also an impressive debutante as manager.
Everton finally regained some form to despatch Bournemouth in front of a joyous Goodison crowd with goals from Jordan, MVP Jack Harrison and Doucoure.
United were one down to Brentford at half time but Scott McTominay pulled the fat out of the fire with a brace in stoppage time. The veteran United defence looked vulnerable, but Erikson and MVP Fernandes were creative in midfield.
There were three draws on Sunday.
Lewis Dunk, Brighton‘s unlikely hero, scored the late equalizer at the Amex after Simon Adingra opened the scoring stealing the ball and beating the sprawling Alisson from long range. A first half brace from MVP Salah put Liverpool in front before Dunk leveled it. A draw was perhaps less than the worthy, hard-working Brighton deserved.
Having thumped PSG midweek Newcastle could only manage a draw against West Ham. Isak narrowly missed out on a hat trick hitting the upright from a narrow angle.
Wolves vs. Aston Villa was exciting from minute 1 with some tantalizing attempts and cynical yellows. Take a look at the lineups- some of the best players in the world – from Europe,South America and Asia . Hwang broke the tie in the 52nd minute after some outstanding work down the right from Pedro Neto! Only two minutes later player of the match Ollie Watkins set up Pau Torres who fired in the equalizer. Lenin’s was sent off following a second yellow in the ninety fourth minute. And Watkins hit the post in the fourteenth minute of stoppage time.
Arteta’s Arsenal defeated Guardiola’s City with a late goal coming from MVP Martinelli at a jubilant Emirates. TwoPremier League losses in a row from a lacklustre City though they did beat Red Bull in Leipzig mid-week.
Now Aston Villa are fifth, Brighton sixth, West Ham seventh. But the increasingly impressive Spurs are top on goal difference over Arsenal with City in third. Liverpool are fourth but Everton are sixteenth. Fulham and Notts Forest are mid-table (along with United and Chelsea!)but with Ream and Robinson Fulham have the potential to go much higher. They hammered the hapless Sheffield United yesterday.
By the way Men in Blazers is back at 1.00pm Central today (Sunday). Roger Bennet talks with a highly entertaining Matt Turner of Notts Forest and USA. Also Anthony Robinson (of Fulham and USA) is a lovable US scouser! Rog rounds it off with an interview with the admirable 78 year old self-made billionaire, Bill Foley owner of Bournemouth AFC. It’s on Peacock so if you’re busy be sure and catch it later!
